Japan 10/31/2007 A - Central Wholesale Market in Tsukiji

Map of the Tsukiji Market   The outer market contains small restaurants and shops   This is the farm products market

More farm products   More farm products   The farm products wholesale area

In front of the Marine Products market.   See this long row with aisle signs? Each aisle is at least 1/4 mile long.   A huge disposal unit collects all the used styrofoam at the end of the day. I assume it is recycled.

Unagi - Fresh Water Eal   Uni - Sea Urchin Eggs   Tiny fish and shrimp (krill?)

Ebi - Sweet Shrimp   Ebi (Tiger Prawns?)   Wasabi - Fresh, whole Japanese horseradish

Maguro - whole flash frozen yellowfin tuna (note the small yellow fins, hence the name)

Cutting blocks of frozen tuna with a band saw   Sliced tuna for sale   Whole sections of tuna

Ika - Squid/Cuttlefish

Some type of crab.   Mini Crabs (alive)

A Pacific lobster. Note the lack of claws found in Atlantic Lobster and the lack of a long spines found in other Pacific lobster.   A strange sea snail or mollusk of some sort.   Japanese Conch

Abalone   Mirugai - Geoduck or "Giant Clam"   Hotategai - Scallop

Anko - a type of Anglerfish   Tako - Octopus   Red Bigeye?
Turns out that this fish is called Kinmedai. I found this in an odd place, the blog for L2O, a new restaurant that opened in 2008 in Chicago

Unknown   I just thought this was funny because they cut holes in the boxes so the fins can hang out.   Tai - Red Snapper

Tamago Yaki - Egg Omelettes, which the Japanese take very seriously.   Ikasumi - Squid Ink Ice Cream. This grey soft serve tasted sweet and earthy or oceany, but not fishy. Quite interesting. You could have told me it was grey flavored vanilla and that would have worked too ¥350
