  Thursday August 1, 2002 - Kyoto Trip A

Miyako on the bus to Kyoto.

Crossing the straight from Shikoku island to Honshou island (the main island)

Poyao and Takako sleep on the bus.

Kyoto Station... it's huge!

I think these are lights... but they're awefully big!

The tourist kiosk actually has a button for "Divine Help." Very interesting. I wonder if there are any churches on the list.

Miwa and Miyako on the public transit bus to our first destination.

Poyao looking cool.

Our first site, an old style house and shrine to an ancient Japanese shogun.

Miwa and Miyako stand in front of the entrance.

The memorial shrine is surrounded by this pretty little lake.

Here is the memorial shrine, a house plated in gold.

The placement of the house is beautiful!

Here's a boat sculpture made of plants.

I'm not at all sure what Poyao is doing.

Poyao was tired today and had to rest on the way up the stairs.

Poyao tries to look cool, but we all know he's just tired.

Really tired.

Well, I guess it IS a long walk.

Sitting again?

Other tourists say prayers and throw money to false gods.

Outside the shrine is another shrine (surrounded convenienty by souvenir shops).

Next stop, Kyoto Studios, where an ancient Japanese village has been rebuilt for use in TV shows and movies. Here a stage hand carts some equipment to the set currently in use.

Here we see the set in use with some actors and extras getting ready.

Look, it's the main character! Who is this guy, you ask? It's Mito Komon! A Japanese Robin Hood of sorts.

Ok, I'm not sure what this is supposed to be. Some sort of scary Lochness type monster, but to be honest, it was pretty dissappointing.

Old fashioned bathroom. After you went, you could cart "it" away. Far away.

I managed to get a sneaky picture of Poyao using the bathroom...

Thise cute little animals are holding a very useful tool. An ear scraper, so you can clean out your own ear wax.

Is it a plane? Is it super man? No, it's a mechanized ninja!

The main courtyard at Kyoto studios.

Shopping in Kyoto. It's a lot more crowded here than Tokushima.

More cars and more people.

These unique sushi rolls are made of soba noodles instead of rice! They were good, but I think I like rice more.
